The Friday Night Project
was started by Steve Hunt and Mo Shearing in October 2008 to
cater for young people (16 to 21 year olds) in our community who are too old for
the Youth Centre and were looking for a drop in centre to suit their needs.
A presentation was
made to East Dorset Community Partnership and the funding secured was used to
pay for a qualifying Youth Leader and the hire of the Youth Club. The
project was commenced in Oct 2008 and was well received by the young people of
West Moors and the community .
Police surveys which covered this period of time
have showed that anti social behaviour has reduced and consequently telephone
calls to the Police relating to acts of vandalism have also reduced
substantially reduced.
The views from the
young people were that the project was a success, they could meet with
their friends in a relaxed and safe environment, playing pool, table tennis,
listening to music and engaging in conversation/discussions on issues and
concerns they were facing.
A number of
CV's were completed, as some of the young people were applying for full
or part time employment. This is ongoing support for young people.
During this period the relationship with the Police improved and
Football matches were arranged between the Police and the young people.
Some of the young people now play in the men's Football tem organised by
St Mary's Church.
Further funding has been secured by Steve Hunt for the Friday Night Project
to continue the project from Oct 2009 through to April 2010.
It will run on the same basis i.e. a drop in centre for the young people
of the community. In the period of Oct 2010 to April 2012 the
project will not run as there are no young people of the age
group to participate.
The project is such that it can be revitalised if the
need of the young people is there
