West Moors YOUTH Centre
|
West Moors Youth club started in 1958 by meeting in the United Reform Church Hall. The club moved in 1978 and now meets at the Youth Centre, Fryers Field which was officially opened in 1980. West Moors Youth Club continues to go from strength to strength, with up to 50 young people attending Youth Club on Monday and Tuesday nights
We have a number of facilities in the club, Pool, Table Tennis, Darts, Basket ball and some Play stations but best of all, we get to go on lot's of trips e.g. Theatre shows., Ski Centre, Ice Skating etc.
We have people come into the club to advise us on such things as makeup, awareness of drugs, employment opportunities. We also have an end of term outing to somewhere like a Theme park.
The club meets on Monday nights 19.30 - 21.45 (year 9, going on 19) and on Tuesday nights 19.15 - 21.30 (years 6 to 8) Both the Monday and Tuesday club have a set of dancers who enter local dance competitions and do very well.
In May 2007 our Youth Centre dancers came away from a Dorset dance competition in Weymouth with 16 trophies for winning or finishing runners up, in various dance competitions/ themes. We have a busy programme up to the school summer holidays with pool tournaments, dancing competitions, visits to the police station, end of term disco and our presentation night on the 14th July 2009
We also have Saturday morning, football club. It's a great club with lot's of activities and you get to mix with lot's of other young people. Why not come along and join us!
Disabled toilets have now been completed in the Youth Centre with monies raised by the youth, either form their own fund raising such as the organising of the annual Carols at the Petwyn and grants of which the youth have applied for.
The Youth Centre have been working with West Moors Parish council to re-surface the Multi use Games Area and this was completed in April 2009, with half of the area being laid with Astroturf. This can be hired via the Parish office. The other half of the area has a tarmac surface. It has free entry and is open 24/7 with Basketball, Football, Tennis and Five a side football facilities. The entrance is by the Skatepark. Also in conjunction with the Parish Council we have marked off a mini soccer football pitch in Fryer field for the young people to use.
